Re: Updates: Central Jersey Pinball Show possibility

There are so many considerations when doing something like this.

You will need a tax number if you charge admission, NJ taxes admission
to Trade Shows, amusement parks, etc (see nj division of taxation
site...it tells you quite a lot) You can register as a business in
NJ, at lest 15 days before, here: http://www.state.nj.us/njbgs/. You
probably want to at least be an LLC so you don't lose your house if
someone sues you. The LLC may cost you a couple hundred for a lawyer.

Will this market bear yet another show?
(There are at least 3 big shows in the Mid-Atlantic region that I know
of. I thought the Wayne show was over)

Will you get decent vendor participation? Nothing worse that going to
a show with 3 participating vendors with crappy merch.

Is the location near decent accomodations if people will be traveling?
--and they will be.

Is the location in a safe, secure environment? doesn't seem like it.

Is the location easy to get to via major highways/airport? Probably
okay here.

Do you have a media sponsorship? Radio/newspaper/tv all?

Is the venue hadicapped accessible. Should be by now but be sure it is
before you commit.

Are your events AND your vendors insured? Some towns call for a
Certificate of Insurance from both the event promotor AND EACH
participating vendor.

Do you need a permit from the town to hold the event? Some towns
require permits for events within town limits that will have over a
certain amount of people in attendance regardless of whether it is in
a convention venue or not.

Does the town require you to hire police to direct traffic/ secure
your event? If you expect over a certain amount of people to show up
all at once and the venue is in a location that may cause a traffic
problem, some towns insist on it.

50/50-raffle: DO NOT advertise any sort of game of chance (50/50,
raffle, etc) unless you get a game of chance permit. If you do
anything it MUST BE no purchase necessary in this state. The Gaming
Commision here is EXTREMELY active and will not allow you or even fine
you for conducting a raffle. If you do a win a free pinball machine or
other door prizes, make sure you put NO PURCHASE NECESSARY on it
somehow. There are ways to kinda get around it. I can fill you in if
need be when the time comes, but I can tell you from experience that
NJ Gaming is VERY MUCH AWARE of things like that. They even bust
little 4-H fairs and stuff, believe it.

I work for a mid-size newspaper in South Jersey and we hold a Yard
Sale every year at the Camden Waterfront. It costs us nearly 15K to
put on because of all the permits, police presense, portapots, food
vending and parking issues, not to mention getting people to volunteer
to help us organize it, get parked in the morning to set up their
crap.

That's another thing. if you plan on a flea market. Vendor space and
getting them all parked properly w/o incident. A literal nightmare for
us, parking 450-700 people at 5am that have never set up at a flea
market. Yikes!

Good luck with it. It's quite a challenge. You need at least 10 solid
people to help you with promoting/arranging/running this thing or it
will be a disaster. Guaranteed.

Since there is still interest in such a show, I just want to post my
findings in my research into such a thing.
Time of Event: Sometime between August and October
Probable Location: Asbury Park Convention Center (Right on the
boardwalk)
Floor Area: 12,000 sqft
Approximate Cost to Rent: $3,600 for one day
Insurance: $1,000,000 Liability
Approximate Cost: $1,000
Tax Issues: I'm not an accountant, so still unsure
Cost to be a vendor: Not sure yet
Cost to attend: If any, not sure
Subject of show: Any arcade, musical, or vending machine, as well as
parts, and other gameroom items.

If anyone can help me work out the details further, please do. If its
going to cost five grand to do this, money that I do not presently
have, what can I do? How much does it cost to be a vendor at
Allentown, out of curiousity?
