Could be a wrong wire but it was working- it has only just failed. I have
buzzed out the plug as well and I know both the header pin and the plug are
fine. I have reflowed all the solder joins again and still no joy.
Can a triac fail under load? Or perhaps the transistor? I 've never seen
that behaviour from either but I am starting to grasp at straws

I haven't really looked into it schematics-wise, but if you say you
shorted it and it works fine, but when you put the connector on, it
fails, my mind immediately starts to go down the path of bad pin,
incorrect color wire in incorrect hole (maybe accidentally moved it
over one) type scenarios. You said you put a new connector on. Check
your wire colors and pin numbers to ensure your not moved over or
incorrect.
