Re: Tech Help for Big Hit 1977 gottlieb

Often, the way to troubleshoot a problem is to identify what is
working.

* General Illumination OK? Head/Playfield/Cabinet?
* Playfield Solenoids/Flippers? Do any of them work?
* Any Feature Lamps working? Playfield/Head?
* Score Reels reset? Points/Runs?

The more detailed you can get, the more effective the advice will be.

Found part of the problem the stepper unit in the head was not
resetting was stuck when i reset the unit the game would play and score
as normal BUT it still does not count every ball in play, the stepper
does not advance all the time (weak solenoid ? ) also is still does not
show which ball is in play (light up) and when game is over iy does not
give a match #. Thanks for all the help Art

Make sure the lockdown bar on the reset bank is tight and aligned
properly (not twisted or skewed) - there should be two wing nuts
holding this down, but then again, 1977--may not have this reset bank.

Look at each relay in the main cabinet and actuate each of these by
hand with the power off to see if there is any mis-alignment. In other
words, if a switch is open and you actuate the relay by hand it should
close and vice versa - Gottlieb's can be very tricky in getting this
just right and you can do may more mis-adjustment by fiddling with it.
Just observe and see if there are any gaps that look too close or far
away by comparing them to each other. If un-sure, do not adjust, note
it's position, then move on to look for anything more obvious. If you
can't find anything else, adjust one switch at a time so that back
tracking is easier. Remember which switches you adjust as you may need
to revisit them when you get your original problem fixed and new things
crop up - In short, go slow and observe.

Inspect your player unit in the head for broken wires or any
mis-alignment. Sometimes just actuating this by hand is enough to get
it aligned and going again - also look for oil, grease or dirt on
stepper units and player units - clean any units or linkages and do not
re-lubricate.

If your game resets, but items like ball not going into shooter land
and/or "Ball 1" / "Player 1" not lighting up, there is most likely a
switch alignment issue or dirty contacts.

I like Gottlieb relays since they are easy to dis-mount and get a
better view, plus easier to clean. One small retaining key and they
come right out - definetly thinking of the tech in this design.

Post what you find!
