Re: Mylar removal

You'll want to use naphtha to remove all residue before clear.

I just remembered one more thing. What I liked about alcohol is that I
know it will evaporate completely. I do not know what is in GooGone,
but the one I used left an citrus smell on the surface. That may be ok
for when you want to wax afterwards, but I was going to clearcoat, and
I wanted the surfaces to be COMPLETELY clean of all oils and foreign
substances. The alcohol does a good job disolving all kinds of oils
and dirt, and with Magic Eraser, you pick it all up. What does remain
can be very clean if you keep rinsing and wiping.

I did a test last year. Mylar removed with freeze spray. This
(unfortunately) leaves the thickest layer of glue on the playfield as
it solidifies (protects paint that way IMHO). Then I put down a puddle
of Naphtha, GooGone and alcohol in separate areas, and covered it with
Saran wrap to prevent evaporation. Hands down, alcohol disolved that
20 year old glue much better and faster. Did not affect paint at all
(1985 Space Shuttle).

I like the freeze method. GG sounds like it would be way slower than
the freeze method. I removed the full playfield mylar from a Pinball
Magic in less than ten minutes. The mylar practically falls off.
After that it is just a matter of removing the glue with a terry towel
and GG, Naptha or alcohol. The glue will booger up as you rub it.
Keep rotating to a clean part of the cloth and before you know it the
playfield is clean!

My method: freeze spray and alcohol. Works on playfields as old as
Space Shuttle (1985). Very effective. I have photos and write-up FTR.

I recomend freeze spray on the older games also but removing the glue
is a lot harder. good idea on the GG dam. also if you fog your inserts
when removing the mylar you can just use a hair dryer right away and
unfog them.
