Im looking for a playfield to practice touchups and clearcoating on.
Would love to find a cheap J*D or HS*2 pf as I have both machines and
could then place the pf in one of them if it turns out ok. But in any
case just a PF to practice on would be fine.
Thanks

That's an oxymoron, a cheap JD or HS2 playfield. My suggestion is, have
some confidence in your abilities, and go for it with the ones you
have. Decide which one has less touchups, pull all of your upper PF
stuff off, and do it right in the cabinet without removing the PF. It's
at a good height for doing the touchups, and after you mask off the
inner cabinet, you can shoot clear on it right there. Take a look at
Cliffy's Pinbot restoration for pics on doing it this way. A 2X4 under
the front edge of the PF will level it almost exactly. My artistic
abilities are pretty damn limited, and yet take a look at my Grand
Lizard T/U and CC job at:

.. Turned out pretty good if you ask me, although, admittedly, this was
the 4th machine I've CC'ed, so my confidence level is higher. If you
use Varathane, which I recommend, it is very forgiving, it self-levels
real nice, and you can do muliple coats at one time, although Clay
doesn't recommend it. Personally I've been getting better results and
faster cure time with Minwax Polycrylic gloss water based, plus it
really has no problem with multiple wet coats. There's lots of info out
there, read it and do it. Just remember that surface prep is the key -
you won't hide mistakes or poor prep when you clear it, you will only
magnify the mistakes.
