Because at a retail they are probably worth what they are asking. Most
retail markup is 100 to 150 percent (regardless of condition). Think about
what a nice Adams sells for on this group. Then double the price (and then
add a bit more) and see what price you come up with. (would that be around
$8000?)
The truth is if you work with private transactions long enough. Retail
prices are going to seem crazy. But if you look at it from a retail end.
There is a reason for a retail business's and the prices that they charge.
A good example of this is cars and motorcycles. When a car dealership or
motorcycle dealership has a used car/bike for sale. Have they did
everything to make it as nice as possible? Nope, detail it at most, fix
anything that makes it unsafe and that's it. Because the money isn't there
for them to dump labor into it and still make as much as leaving as is.
The truth is labor in this country is just too expensive to waste on
anything anymore. There is no profit in extended labor (in most but not all
situations). Treasure cove gets big money for there pins, but think about
how many customers are not in there bracket. Now look at the opposite end,
look at how many customers are in the price bracket of coin op warehouse.
I can buy pacmans in the 500-700 range all day long. Retail they get
1200-1400.
I don't know how many pins you have in your collection. But if you sold
them at newsgroup prices, could you live off the net profit for even a
month. Would the profit pay your morgage/insurance/car
payment/food/medical/kids schooling/alimony/ blah blah blah?
If you believe in the american way (high wages/good insurance/good standard
of living), it will never bother you to see something priced high
(regardless of product). If you want it sold for a cutthroat profit, you
may want to move to china. I am not saying you should pay retail (obviously
you are knowlegeable enough to buy privately), but to think that a retail
establishment can sell a product for the same price as privately is nuts.

If they want to eat and cloth their family's on a long term basis, why
not do the needed work to get the games to where they are worth what
they are asking? When I go to work, I complete the jobs I am working
on.. A little more effort on their part is clearly called for with the
prices they are asking, maybe if they put the effort into the game they
would be selling more of them, instead of having to keep relisting them
on Ebay and paying the listing fee's over and over again.

Yep, if you don't know what you are buying, then buying privately is a
problem.
At least if you buy retail and you have a problem, the terms are pretty
much
laid out so you know what to expect and not expect.
Same thing goes for auctions. Chances are you will always buy cheapest
from
private individual. It elimates overhead, fees, sales tax, and a profit
margin. After all when you go to work, do you take home a paycheck? I
am
sure the guys that work at easterncoinop would like to eat and clothe
their
familys.

So basically I should never buy from retail, my prices will be higher
and the quality lower..

The logic is that its a retail establishment so the prices will be
higher
due to the cost of overhead (the same for cars, motorcycles, or
especially
any type of collectible).
Also the condition isn't near as critical because newbie buyers that
are
uneducated or more likely don't care about the condition compared to a
collector. While that playfield may be trashed in RGP's eyes
(certainly
didn't look trashed to me), it would most likely be just fine for most
customers who stop by to look at it, or browse and see it on ebay.
For
many people paint wear really is not a big deal as long as the art for
the
most part is there. They will likely never clean it, quit playing it
after
a month in their home, and will move on to another type of toy next
year.

So an Addams with a trashed playfield is worth 4K because it is
retail?
Not sure what logic your using, but I don't like it..

once again, at a retail establisment, is that price really that
high?
if AF sell for around $3000 privately, then regardless of
condition I
would
think that $4000 is about right retail.
