Re: whirlwind locked on coils/flashers

For this kind of problem Leon outlines how to make a bank of LEDs you
can plug into the driver pins on the board so you can leave the plug to
the locked on coil or flashlamp disconnected during troubleshooting.
Look at the WPC/WPC95 repair method about halfway down the page at
http://www.flipper-pinball-fan.be/ It may be confusing by looking at
Leons drawing, but basically you run 5v to a 470 ohm resistor to the
cathode of a LED and hook the other end to your driver pin on the
board. If the LED is lit, it means the driver is "on", off means it's
"off". You make an entire bank of LEDs and a connector to match your
game and you can look at all the drives on that connector at the same
time. Works great and you don't burn up coils during troubleshooting,
just look at the LEDs. Also works the same way for flashlamp
troubleshooting, just hook the LEDs to whatever plug drives the trouble
flashlamps and see if the LED is lit meaning the driver is "on".

replace the PRE-driver of q24! if q24 was fried it's likely the pre
driver was dead too (trace it back on the schematics) if that doesn't
solve it then you have a bad PIA chip on your board or a dead buffer
chip between the pre driver and the PIA (if there are buffer chips
there not that familiar iwth sys11)

Is the game seeing the multiball switch as being closed all the time?
The software might hold on the coil if it thinks the coil never fires.
(Slim I know, but worth a look in switch levels)
