You have that backwards. Most real newsreaders will quote messages
automatically. It was google that was being the bad actor when it updated
groups and turned that off. They've since changed their ways and now
quoting is on again by default. (THANK GOD!!)

Hard to explain correctly what I am trying to say. But, as you said,
the good newsreaders will quote. Because of that feature, people using
those newsreaders for responding will have the quoted text pulled in
that those using Google cannot see anymore. Because of that, those
using Google Groups will see the post that was deleted. See what I am
trying to get at?

Google can't quote what is not there anymore due to being deleted from
it's database. But, we can still see the posts if people using real
newsreaders quote from different servers and post in the group.
