I got sick and tired of Canadians asking me to falsify customs
documents for lesser amounts. I'm not talking about a few isolated
instances, I mean the majority of purchasers requested this. I flat out
refused and got tired of dealing with the headache.
I am saddened by this view of Canadians. I have purchased many things
from the states and have had nice transactions with everyone. Usually I
just end up asking that people reconsider shipping it to canada. Most
say sure, only the odd one says no. So far it hasn't been a problem,
but I do have a friend lined up in Seattle should I really need
something. Of course if I really need something, I just ask my friend
to open/verify the package to confirm the contents. ( I wouldn't want
him to be shipping me drugs or such ). He then seals it up again and
sends it to me. This costs a little more, but once again I only do this
if it is something I desperately need.
I have had sellers alter the value or mark things as a gift on their
own volition. It doesn't really matter, revenue canada is pretty good
at cross checking transactions, and ignores the gift marking. They just
charge according to what they think was paid.
The one thing that fries my shorts is the amount that UPS charges for
customs brokerage. I generally ask all sellers to ship USPS as then
Canada Post does the brokerage and charges $5 instead of $30.
Well and I must add that since I live in Saskatchewan, I end up making
road trips to pick up machines. I have seen a great deal of your
beautiful country driving as far as Atlanta for a pin. (Well, we made a
family vacation out of the trip). All in all, I have to say a huge
thank you to those sellers who are willing to hold a machine for me
until I can come and pick it up (I pay enough in advance that they
aren't worried about me not showing up). I have enjoyed meeting these
fellow pin enthusiasts and keep in touch with several of them to this
day.
