TECH: Terminator 2 Revisited

Ok folks, this is for information purposes and for Googling in the
future.
If you remember, a long while back, I posted about my T2 having
multiple lights on when others were supposed to be on. MANY lights were
wrong and the lamp matrix looked like a word search on steroids when
you looked at what was lit with what. After talking with many people, I
again went back after letting it sit for a few month (as punishment for
being so tough to fix), I again started looking for the culprit. I
finally found it! It was a diode problem inside the T2 skull. The
wiring was wrong in the skull and therfore, the diode was not in the
circuit properly! I honestly did not look there at all for the longest
time because it didn't dawn on me that there was a diode in there. Duh.
Next, I had three full strings of CPU controlled lamps out. I could not
find anything wrong. Finally, I took that little Ozi-Fox hand-held
o-scope I have and started tracing signals. What do you know, some
signals are missing! Found that someone had replaced U18 and tore up
three pads! Signals are back and so are my CPU controlled lights!
Next, I had crappy GI. Typical, no problem. Well, I re-wire the entire
connector and now I am missing the GI down the entire left side and the
center lights that make up the CPU on the playfield. I checked and
checked but everything was wired correctly (thanks for posting the
pictures of your re-wired GI connector John Wart). Finally, out came
the board and out came my trusty Fluke and I started tracing pin for
pin. I finally found that a trace had broken due to heat, going to one
of the SCR's. Put in a jumper and now all my GI works! This break in
continuity was absolutely invisible. It had to be broken at the
feed-thru. Tricky.
I just thought this many problems and their fixes would be a good
techie post. I hope it helps others out there. I know this machine made
me want to just give up and sell it. Many of you know the feeling I
have right now knowing I did not give up and it is now complete and
playing fantastic. I WON!!!
