Re: Tech Assistance Needed

Sounds like a bad wire connection that opens when the playfield is in the
down position. Question is whether it's a problem with the switch wire(s)
or the coil/solenoid wire(s).

First thing I would do to verify is take a voltage reading on the kicker
coils when playfield is up and when it is down. Look for about 30vdc on the
coil lugs. If it's absent when playfield goes down, then you've got a break
in the coil power wire somewhere.

You can't really test voltage on the switch wires as they're part of the
switch matrix, but I would put game in switch test and activate switch in up
and down playfield position and see if you get any response on the game's
displays when you do it. If no response when down, it's a switch wiring
problem.

Only part in the game that really moves/flexes when you raise/lower the
playfield is the wires/cables that go from the playfield in the back and up
through the "neck" of the machine. They all connect with some large
connectors mid-way in the harness near the backbox opening, so you could
check to see if you just have a loose or dirty connection there.

Otherwise it could be a bad wire in the harness- something pinched, or
stretched, etc. Some jiggling of the wires and testing continuity on both
ends may help find it but this is typically a problem that takes some basic
troubleshooting/testing and time- no easy/quick answers.

I have a 1977 Williams Hot Tip. The "Top" and "left Side" eject work
when I have the play field in the up position. When I put the play
field in the play position, they don't work. Any thoughts?
