I feel your pain....here's what I do. First, I read here on the group,
and also the pinball database and finally, pinball books.

When I find a title I don't know, I research it. If it's something
that looks interesting, I download and play the virtual pinball table.

That gives me enough feel for the game to know whether I want to buy
one, and from there it's a trip to ebay, craigs list, mr.pinball or
local for sale ads until I find one to buy.

Playing them on location is not an option here either.
