Re: tech: williams 80b help needed( monte carlo)
Wow, must be sys80 day. Just replied to another post today and as Mario
and Jim added it adds up to a long laundry list of checks and repairs.
Did you take the glass/translite off the head and check the boards? Make
sure they are all attached and not hanging or touching each other. The
plastic stand-off pins usually break from taking the boards in and out
so much over the years!
Stuck driver/solenoid could be caused by faulty grounds and/or the
interconnect cable between the CPU and the driver board. It could also be
the output connector coming out of the driver going down to the cabinet.
The grounds are usually bad as well as the cable connectors and need to
be repaired/replaced. Grounds come to a common point in the cabinet at
the transformer panel. Check them for loose connections. Remove the
interconnect cable and driver/cabinet cable and check for corroded pins
and clean the contacts on the boards before reseating. The connectors
will probably need repair or replacing.
After this voltages need to be checked, components checked/replaced.
You can also take it down to a basic system without sound, displays, etc
to troubleshoot.
Clay's site has a great write-up to follow. It's a bit of work but once
all the fixes are done the machines are reliable.
