The plunger that is broken acts a release that allows the eyes to
close. They stay in a half open position when open, but when the coil
activates the veritical plunger opens the eye lids fully. When the
horizontal plunger is working correctly in then engages to keep the
eyes open, when it's coil activates it pulls the plunger, which release
the vertical plunger to the eyes close. That is why the eyes will seem
to open wider, but never close.
Taking the heads out and apart is not an easy task. Below is a link to
