Re: Netrek XP 2006 v1.3 released

One additional update, the Netrek Configuration Utility for this version has
been updated to perform a find/replace for configuration changes instead of
appending the new configuration options to the bottom of the netrekrc.txt
file.

Hi all, the latest version of Netrek XP 2006 is now ready for the
public.
Version 1.3 is a major release, and it is strongly recommended that
all users upgrade. It is also most likely the last major release for
the client
that will be done by me.

One of the main features of this version is the ability to change all
major
configuration settings in game. With the in game save key ("),
settings are
saved between sessions. No need to edit your netrekrc ever again.

Speaking of which, the default configuration file has been renamed
from netrekrc
to netrekrc.txt, as this is a more Windows friendly file extension.
Netrekrc will
still work, but the client will look for a netrekrc.txt first in your
netrek directory.

Another major feature is the ability to both zoom in/out the tactical
window,
and the ability to resize the tactical window to smaller/larger.
500x500 is no
longer a limitation on how far you can see...only your monitor size
determines
how far you can make your windows now! The galactic window is also
resizeable.
The default keys for zoom in/out is mouse wheel scroll. Use high res
bitmap sets
in the client and zoom to finally see some nice detail on the ships
and planets :).
To resize your tactical/galactic, right click the window border to
activate the sizing
border, then drag to new size. Right click window when done to go
back to the
regular border. If you make the tactical bigger, you may notice a
dashed white
box in your tactical. This is the 500x500 range, which is the limit
on what the server
will send you weapons data for. Fog of war, so to speak. You can
disable the box
via the options menu if you don't like it.

Another neat feature are the message windows, which are now not only
resizeable
in game, but also support cut/paste and clickable website links.

There are several new server features which this client version takes
advantage of,
including support to show all weapons on the galactic map for
observers, and
anti packet loss features like for the case of missing planet pops.
Honestly, I
could go on and on, the bug fixes and new features are vast. Read the
next post
for the full feature/fixes/changes list.

The client can be found at
http://www.playnetrek.org/netrek/netrekinstall.exe

or at http://www.netrek.org

A note to beta testers who have been using version 1.3, please update
to this finalized version as it has some new features.

In the followup post, I will post the changelog for this version.
Enjoy!

Bill
