I wrote tutorials for both netrek xp mod and xp 2006 in vb and in flash.
The flash version is nice because, even though it is based on xp mod, it is
browser based and can be used by multiple operating systems. The overall
concept of getting into a game and playing is explained and applies to most
versions(except for some of the keys and commands used). The problem is,
aside from changing pages, none of them are interactive. They are composed
of images and text which can get boring. Especially for the younger crowd.

It would be nice to have an interactive training tool at the server or
standalone level. Something that showed newbies how to perform specific
tasks and stepped them through the game while they played to help keep their
interest so they weren't just reading text and looking at images. I believe
this type of training or tutorial is what you are referring to. Seems like
a lot of todays games provide this type of learning tool. There was talk of
a building a training server. Something that, from what I understand, had
some code built for years ago but was lost and requires work at the server
level which goes well beyond me.

I agree with steep learning curve. So do some other games with 30
different keys or with complex sequence to pick up armies or transport
armies. They provide 'training levels' or 'tutorial' for that.
Netrek needs similar stuff.
