Re: [GW] Rumored release dates

Why the hell do we need a codex anyway? I don't understand why they
attempt to make it look like they are putting a load of effort into it,
when a living rulebook approach would work so much better. That way they
could save money on printing costs, update the codex's regularly, and
make sure everyone has access to the latest rules. Hell, I'm sure most
people would be willing to pay a fee for this service, it's not like we
can use a codex without spending a fortune on the minis anyway!

At a guess printing is only a fraction of the production costs.
Probably the only one here that has any idea where profit is being
realised is Matt. I can guess where the high costs are.

What we know about GW is that they're very big on attempting to create
lock-in in their product. Giving away things isn't very good for lock
in.

Personally I think someone could make a decent amount of money by
following the model of some of the more nimble software companies.

Recently I was looking at purchasing a particular pieced of role based
software. There's about four real applications out there. Three of
them are between US$6,000-10,000. The other is AU$137. They're going
for volume and have an extremely good reputation. They also have
primarily a download model. They're doing extremely well.

Imagine a game that adapted to any period from skirmish to large scale
with a ruleset that you can download and have on your computer or your
smart device (phone, ipod, etc). With an online force generator that
also downloads to smart devices. Or you can print it out, and use a pen
and paper.

The game system adapts to any miniatures from any manufacturer. And you
buy a yearly subscription for the game.

I think it would make a dent in GW's lock-in.
