companies make the best models (ie qualityof sprues, detail, etc.). I knowItaleri makes some jaw-droppers, but I'm not able to shell out US$50 - 80

For practice, get one of the old Revell or Airfix Battleships, not
the
big 350th scale, but the 1/600-1/720 scale cheap, and fit fairly well
together. Ebay, or hobby shop thats been around for years.
Then wait for one of those 40% off coupons from Hobby Lobby
and get one of the larger kits.
And I also want to know if I have to do anything
different from what I do now with building minis. Do I prime the model? I'm
not going to use enamels, so....what now? Links to appropriate sites are
quite welcome.
Spray primer grey for topside, and oxide red for the hull.
Acrylics are fine, but would think about airbrushing
spray the parts while on sprue, but spray the hull assembled,
without the deck.
Hardest part will be masking the waterline, with the thin
black ine lbetween.
get the good grade 3M masking tape, but you can use
regular 3M 'Magic' tape, but be carefull as it can lift paint.
wartime ships had the teak decks stained dk blue.
Now what makes a real model, is photo etch details for ladders
radas and railings and such

put togeter with superglue and tweezers. expensive, but $20
of brass turns a $20 Revell ship into an eyepopper.
