I'm definetely old-school.
I like the TFL rules a lot, mostly as there design philosophy is 'play the
period, not the rules' I was suggesting them as an idea rather than the
holy garil (I too am a inveterate rules tinkerer).
I have no problem with commerical sets of rules. I'm just one of those
wierdos who when they get a brain-worm, cannot get rid of it until it's been
transferred to paper (or word processor, as the case might be).
Unfortunately (for me) a lot of stuff I come across in the commercial rules
market is either a) so English in tone / structure to be completely
unplayble for this 'merican (ie, DBM / DBR / HOT springs immediately to
mind) or b) dont' adequatly cover my pet period. For example, I
scratch-built close to 200 1/1600 scale Napoleonic sailing ships using balsa
wood, toothpicks, tracing paper and pins. Yet all the age of sail naval
rules I came across were based-upon each player only commanding one or two
ships - I wanted to play with entire fleets of sailing ships. So in defense
of my time investment in scratch-building, I wrote a set of fleet-level
sailing ship rules.
<shrug>
The ancinets/meds/fantasy rules I would be interested in, rules for
fighting I can find, its integrated magic I haven't found a system I am
happy with yet.
I'm an ex-computer programmer. So I write miniature rules like I used to
write computer code. Modular. With the set of ancient / medieval /
renaissance / fantasy rules I'm currently developing the magic is completely
integrated into the game structure. But if you choose to leave it
completely out and play straight-up historical, it doesn't impact the battle
game. And since we're playing with 15mm miniatures right now - I've got a
massive orc and goblin horder in 15mm and a ton of historical armies as puny
'umies - there is no lack of opponents for the greenskins. Plus our games
are huge in comparison to WHFB - one of our basic games is apparently close
to a 10,000 point game in GW terms. We routinely have thirty or more units
per side.
28mm ww2 at the moment is very tempting, there are so many good figure
ranges around and vehicles etc, there are even 4 or 5 good rule sets I
like, its mainly the fact I am having wrist issues and currently can't
paint that I am holding off.
If you've got the money, I can help with your painting problem....
<grin>
But in this case, the cure might definetly be worse than the disease.
