comes with 2 free drones. Small two member drone squads are great for
doing things like screwing with your enemies target priority. Using
them effectively can result in your opponent having to take a
leadership test any time he wants to shoot anything. While their BS is
awful, and you should not be relying on them to kill anything, there
is no harm in trying if you are close enough, and you never know. You
might actually pin something. And with Tau, something pinned means
something you can shoot at for another turn before getting the hell
out of there. The second advantage is the fusion upgrade. Combined
with their speed, this allows them to quickly get in behind vehicles
to shoot at their rear armour (Turbo boost along one of the flanks
turn one, and move in for the kill on turn two).
I don't really wanna blow 60 points on two drones and a short range
tank hunter when could just sit back and pop open all their hard stuff
with rail guns... This is great for those 14 front armor tanks, but
still... the Tau have a ton of anti-tank in their codex, and most of it
will be much harder to kill than a piranha.
I personally find that they only really have their uses when you know
you will be facing lots of tanks / heavilly armoured opponents. My
general list does not actually use any, I was just pointing out one of
their potential rules.
Then again, a bunch of Piranhas with Fusion Blasters could be made toPossibly
hunt Terminators instead... what do you think of this idea?
In the two games I've played, I've used Broadsides to counter
Terminators, but those rail guns are in high demand and the shots would
be better spent killing something else.
Are there any other strategies for handling Terminators? One of the most common ways is to take a squad of crisis suits with any
combination of plasma rifles / fusion blasters. Twin linked plasma
rifles with a Targeting Array (Is that the +1 BS one? I have no codex
here) tend to get fairly reliable kills. Keep in mind that the tau
plasma rifle is AP2, so as long as you can ensure the hits you should
get reliable kills.
The Jump Shoot Jump ability of the Crisis suits is useful for ensuring
that the termies dont get to return fire (you hope =P)
What kind of guns are Termies usually packing? I've encouter them twice,
and both times they were carrying heavy weapons with some pretty decent
range on them.
Favoured option is two assault cannon, R24" - same as the plasma
rifle, so you could jump in, shoot and jump back. The missile launcher
is overpriced for the same weapon any number of other units can take
for far less, and the heavy flamer is both short-ranged and less of a
threat. The basic squad kit is the storm bolter, which also has a 24"
range.
