Better not wait. I predict it'll be shut down shortly.

Why would that be?

I hate being the one to defend GW here, especially after getting one
of their nice little letters on my doorstep (yes, at home, not in
e-mail) recently. But this is getting ridiculous.

Their own dealers have been stopped from using images of GW
*packaging*.

Wrong. They told them not to use GW-created images of GW products and
packaging. A lot of these dealers just go onto GW's website and grab
pictures and then use them. GW paid some photographers and computer
graphics crew to create these images for their use. Then along comes
someone nicking those things to use free of charge to create their own
profit, rather than spending a little of their own time and money to
create images to use.

I've heard of people being told to take down pics of *their own*
painted figs.

Wrong, wrong, WRONG!!! I've talked with these guys a lot. I have to
run three websites that have had their fair share of issues with GW
IP, from the obvious to the absurd. This is a myth. Utter bollocks.
GW actually tells you quite specifically, "Do not use our pictures of
our figures. If you want to spruce up your website with pictures,
take pictures of your own models and use them." In other words, they
advocate people using pics of their own figs! Especially as they know
there's no way, regardless of how much legal firepower they bring,
they could ever make that idea stick in court. This is one of those
ridiculous stories made up by anti-GW folks which ends up getting more
sympathy for GW, as it's obviously not true.

In other words, it seems the GW thought police are looking for
trouble.

And if you're a competitor, they'd have even more incentive to look
busy.

Let's say you want to sell wargames miniatures in competition with
Citadel.

Of course, these are generic RPG based figs, really.

And use the same scale and the same Tolkien-inspired races as
Warhammer.

As a number of companies have, using ex-GW sculptors, looking
reasonably close, without getting sued.

And you call your venture 'War' -something. Or something- 'War'.

Like Warlord? Or Warzone? Or maybe Warmachine?

And that something is 'Avatar'.

Okay. Perhaps I'm being too pessimistic.

But, where GW Legal is concerned, is that possible?

Yes. Berate GW legal when they do something that they should be
berated over, not going by unproven speculation and people claiming
things were done without providing proof for their outrageous claims.

As someone who just had to rework an entire section of a website to be
acceptable to GW IP (it included a lot of old fluff, which I wish
they'd rerelease), I am not a person who takes the position of
defending GW lightly. But I do believe they are getting a bad rap
lately for a lot of things.
