I asked back in Oct. 10 2007 this question.
"Are there principles in the rules of Mahjong?"

I thought the question was simple enough. Apparently it was not. There
was question on my question and also criticism on the way I posted the
question.

This time instead of repeating the question, I will try to give my
simple answer.

My answer is from Dao De Jing of Laozi. The first part of Chapter 25,
my translation, similar to other scholarly versions, is like this.

DAO GAVE BIRTH TO ONE
ONE GAVE BIRTH TO TWO
TWO GAVE BIRTH TO THREE
THREE GAVE BIRTH TO MYRIADS

One is from the Ultimate Birthplace.
Yang carries Yin with it. Yin and Yang are Two.
Yin and Yang combine with another yin or yang to form Three's.
Three's are trigrams. Eight-trigram is Bagua.

Bagua represent "ten-thousand", myriad or all things in the universe.

The simple pattern 2.3.3.3.3 for a winning hand correlates with basic
principle in Daoism. Furthermore, Colors, Directions and Seasons are
cosmology aspects of Daoism. Four rounds to complete a game and/or
more rounds of play represent cyclical changes. Winds are metaphors
for seasons.

This is how I see it.
