Actually, I should have stated above (as a response to Michael's
proposal) that the idea of the seasonal ordering of the directions
(ESWN corresponding to SSAW) superimposed on the typical order of play
(anti-clockwise) does seem like a possibility, but that would imply
that the anti-clockwise rotation was given preference over the seasons/
directions. I would probably expect the opposite and expect for the
order of play to be reversed (clockwise) if the seasons/directions was
viewed as being more significant. I have not come across any reason
for the rotation of play to be given more significance than the
seasons/directions.
Assuming it was imbued with signifance. My idea, for what its worth,
was that the directions were arranged by looking up to the celestial
sphere. Hence, if you look to the East then look up, and draw the
relative positions on your hypothetical 'square in the sky', when you
look at it afterwards you have West at the top, East at the bottom,
South to the right and North to the left. Then with the Seasons
superimposed, and beginning with Spring/East, we get ESWN which
happens to be anticlockwise.
On the other hand, forget the Seasons and keep the relative celestial
positions of the Directions. For some reason the anticlockwise
rotation was used in early card games (ma diao for example), so we go
ESWN around the table rather than ENWS. That was ithinc's idea IIRC.

Hello, Michael,
I see your celestial square like a flat earth on its edge. Am I seeing
it correctly? Your picture suggests looking from the bottom of this
earth. I also see the opposing directions if I were looking from the
other side, of this vertical square flat earth. Am I right?
Hello Allan. Don't you remember my post of Jun 30th @ 10.25pm in the
thread 'Why a Sparrow???? You replied to it so you must have read it.
Can you please refer to that post and subsequent posts to refresh your
memeory. It will save me having to repeat myself. ^_^
Thanks.
Cheers
Actually, I see it as the same as placing the flat square earth on its
East edge, holding the right side in his right hand and the left side
in his left hand, an observer sees what you saw as though standing
under the raised earth (ESWN ccw starting from his feet. Another
observer on the other side of the earth would see ENWS, ccw; and it
would be same as looking down on your raised earth from celestial
space above it.
No. Michael, it's not the answer to the question.
Cheers........
