Well; mostly what every book says (Kageyama) : lots of study (especially reproducing pro games, and tsumego practice), trying to play the moves (tesuji, josekis) they learn even if they dont understand them (*especially* if they dont), reading (sequences) , counting liberties, never play a move which one has been told is bad *until* they are sure this is an exception, etc. A good rule of thumb is that those are the directives every "normal" western player will immediately tell you are stupid, useless, have exceptions, will stifle your style, etc...
