Hans-Georg said several things, starting with

(implicitly) a non-white background is a good idea;
a wood-grain one desirable: No one has argued against
that -- indeed, I supported this idea in my initial
response to r.g.g. This is a "good idea" (TM)-- thanks
to Hans-Georg for suggesting this first.

.... and, at the other extreme:

a White background is "totally unusable" and

"Actually I cannot understand how stupid one must be to create
the picture of a go board with a white surface background and
expect anyone to play on that. I still find that absolutely
ridiculous."

-- this is not only daft, but offensive. Maybe it was
his intention to be offensive?

So I added a simple light grey-scale colouring for the board, and IMO the
result was a considerable improvement. The current grey-scale boards
actually look quite smart once properly guilotined!

I have also seen this, and I agree. Grey-scale has the
advantage that it is (much) cheaper to print than is colour.

My suggestion of printing on coloured paper, had the same
motivation. One sometimes sees plastic (roll-up) "boards"
with different colours -- I have seen turquoise and
yellow (I think!)

So maybe Stijn could offer something similar - sometimes the simplest
changes can make a big impression.

Yes -- definitely desirable. Watch this space.

ps. don't delete the current white background boards though, as they'll
still be required when playing with sets containing grey stones :-)

Yes -- I find that this is the ideal board when playing
one-colour go, and both players use grey stones. :-)
