Thanks for the comparison. Let's see if I understand this. Fuseki evolve
and
books on fuseki have a shelf life of about 10 years. That suggests that by
collecting books on fuseki published every 10 years, one can get an
overview
of the evolution of thought on various fuseki. On the other hand, maybe
the
older books become unavailable for the comparison. Anyway, maybe there is
a better way to get the overview.
I believe there is a better way, through game databases such as those
offered by GoGoD or gobase.org or bundled with software such as SmartGo,
MasterGo, Moyo Go Studio, BiGo, and many others. Fuseki and joseki books
both have the problem that they give no hint as to the popularity of the
patterns described. There are variations in Ishida that have *never* been
played even once in any of the tens of thousands of professional games in
the public record, and they might sit right next to variations played in
thousands of games. There are also countless newer variations that don't
appear in any of the books translated into English.
To understand evolution of the opening, you need to know when variations are
introduced and when they go out of favor; this is easy to determine with a
game database, but most books are useless in this respect.
That being said, I have to admit that following fashions in just a
recreation, and is probably not key to getting stronger for any but the very
strongest amateurs, and maybe not even then. There are many professionals
who are completely disinterested in databases, although they do check out
new games when they become available.
