I can't imagine why any go player would dislike something which
has brought so much attention and popularity to the game.
Nor can I. But perhaps I can help to explain the hostility.

The HnG series has filled a lot of children with enthusiasm for Go. Some
of these sign up for Go servers, typically trying to call themselves
'hikaru', and because this name is taken, ending up calling themselves
'hikaru568' or whatever. The archetypal 'hikaruxxx' has a high opinion
of himself, believes he is going to become a Go professional, plays at
30-kyu or worse, has an attention span measured in milliseconds, and
asks multiple questions without reading the replies.

Other users are likely to find this annoying, though I think it would be
wrong to blame the manga or anime.

While I don't usually like manga or anime, I found the Hikaru no Go series delightful. I thought it did a rather nice job of indicating how really hard it is to become a pro. You can't hold the manga or anime responsible for the responses of idiots, they're idiots anyway :) We have several new players in our local club, and new players on IGS, that came to the game through Hikaru, and they are polite and serious players. I would continue to show the anime at your local club, those that get up and leave you can assign to the category of "pretentious ass". I have yet to meet a stronger player (ie amateur dan level) that didn't like the anime once they'd seen it.
