This isn't irrational, but it /is/ only half (or rather, some other fraction) of the story. I would suggest that for each Hikaruxxx "thinking" they'll go on to sweep all in their path there is probably another xyzxxx who got interested through the anime or manga but who doesn't have pretensions about being the greatest and is playing under a name without the baggage. These people may well be worth playing, and may well not be there without HnG. I doubt you could have one without the other.

Though I'd started playing before I read HnG, I hadn't started online at that point. When I got a KGS account I didn't want to go anywhere near "saixxx", because I *know* I'm not the greatest, and never will be. So I'm a rather boring PeteC...
