My understanding was that Carol applied the finish AFTER applying the
lines. The rest of the production procedures I don't know.
Yeah. I happen to like the color of Colonial Maple myself; that shade
being closer to the colors used in Shaker and Mission furniture and
providing a contrast to both black and white stones.
Alfred (aka TajMahalFred), another blogger, seems to have expressed the

I honestly didn't mind Carol's post. Good gobans in hardwoods at
reasonable prices can be hard to find. We could use more mid-price
options until we accumulate enough discretionary income to purchase
some of Mr. Kuroki's more expensive sets.
