How can someone handicap themself?

As a very interesting episode of hikaru no go, where Sai/Hikaru
was playing the meijin in a game, and at the very end, it was said that
Sai/Hikaru handicapped himself. It brought me to wonder. How is that
possible?

Does on refrain from making certain moves?
Ignore possibilities?
Create a situation on purpose and not exploit it?
Make a few dumb moves on purpose?
Pretend that there are stones there that are not there?

As a teacher of go, I often create situations when playing weaker
players, giving them many chances to exploit my shape, and see
different things. Being very careful not to teach them bad shape.

I think such a skill would come in very handy in playing people closer
(+/- 4 stones) to my rank.

The closest I have come to handicapping myself is pursposly distracting
myself, as in, playing 2 - 5 games at once, reading a book and looking
up every other min, or practicing guitar or violin instead of looking
at the game. ALthough I have had varying results, there has to be an
easier way.

Does anyone have any insight on how this can/should/could be done?
Has anyone out there ever done this before?
Does anyone have a game where 1 player did this so I can study the
style?
Are there any resources on the web that talk more in depth about this?

Thanks,

.
