Is it? Where do you get that from? I thought that alcohol slows down
reactions. I would expect that moderate amounts of alcohol can
increase the strength of a nervous player, making him feel more relaxed
and at ease, whereas larger amounts would impair the game,
making the player more slow witted and perhaps careless.
Although a keen drinker I can't say that I have sufficient experience
for a conclusion. Actually I noticed that the playing strength is
notoriously difficult to predict, I often felt in top shape before the
game and then produced a lousy game, whereas on other occasion
I felt terrible (e.g. hung over, tired, distracted, ill) when sitting
down to play and still managed to play excellently.

I know that moderate alcohol consumption is an advantage for
instance in shooting competition, since it reduces trembling and
calms the nervs.
