The question here is "what is a derivative work, exactly". The answer
will tend to vary a lot, but will invariably be more permissive than
what publishers like to think. There is likely to be some considerable
room between what SJG say they won't let you do and what you actually
/can/ do within the law. Of course, that just means it's lawyer
consulting time for the aspiring third-party publisher.
