Most importantly, they cleaned the system up quite a bit. 3rd edition
revised had grown into an ugly patchwork where everything was handled
by custom partially overlapping custom advantages, and the system and
balance were starting to get a bit lost. 4e cleaned all of that up.
More balance between stats and skills, lots of custom stuff has been
replaced with more generic rules that can deal with many different
cases (Talents are a nice example of this, although I slightly disagree
with the pricing).
