Your choice. There /are/ options, and have been since forever.
But for the most part, none of them are as good, in pure number crunching,
as doing the attack which does normal damage.
Exactly. Then there's tripping a mobile opponent, grappling a
spellcaster, taking out a nasty weapon, outmanoeuvring a gruesome foe,
shifting a bad guy out of a key position, moving for positional
advantage, and all sorts of things that regularly overrides concerns
of pure d/t. Sometimes giving up your full attack is a good move, you
just have to think about it a bit. To d/t or to gain some other
advantage.
4e takes that sort of choice away. I /like/ that sort of choice.
Well, keep in mind, I loved playing casters. Spells were obviously superior
to plinking away with a dagger, but limited.
Where I have always liked fighters with their stand and deliver
default attack being solid and reliable. That type of choice is also
gone from the game.
What I've found is that there's still hard choices to make (do we blow a daily
on this?), but I like the variety more, and I also like that the choices have
much more noticeable differences from each other.
But the type of choices are very narrow. That thing about choosing
which power card to drop, and which to save? Not my favourite type of
game mechanic, and so not impressed with it being the focus of the
game.
Heh. More rewarding gameplay, if that's what you're into. 8]
There is a lot to be said for going into combat with a reasonable expectation
that you'll get to do Something Awesome.
You've given up your 30% at will for 30% 1/day and 10% at will,
and you think it's "Awesome". 3e Fighters are nuclear powered in
comparison to their 4e counterparts.
