All of the indications that I've seen (including the poison pill in the
new licensing) point to WoTC's desire to eliminate 3.5 and earlier
editions from competing with 4e in the marketplace.
NB: Almost all earlier edition pdfs sell for $5, $6 for the bigger
boxed sets. The 3e pdfs have been priced much the same as the hardcovers
since they started selling them.
Interesting...that would suggest either an 'oops' or that they are
particularly concerned that 3.5e continued sales will impact 4e. I
could see where older editions aren't as much of a threat (assuming
that they're seeing less than desired uptake on 4e product) but that
the immediately prior version (that was quite popular) might need an
extra 'push' to get the ongoing customer base off of it.
Given that the discussions here (and some things I've seen elsewhere)
seem to indicate a serious fork in the D&D community around this
change and that 4e seems to be moving in a substantially different
direction from previous editions, I can understand why they might want
to force 3.5e out of the market for business reasons...
I stopped playing D&D with AD&D in the 'back-when' and then picked up
3.5e when it came out and got back into gaming. I found 3.5e to feel
very much like what I remembered from AD&D but with lots of the rough
edges sanded down and big gaps filled in. Having bought and read (and
played a little) 4e core, I don't find that it feels like the same
game. This too may be providing incentive for WoTC to purge the
channel...you don't want folks getting used to the old game before
they move on to the different feel of 4e (and making it harder for a
3.5e DM to get new players kitted out with a PHB and some supplements
would possibly drive things this way).
The 3.5 PHB still sells for a good price on ebay.
Not that long ago I saw a softcover 3.5 PHB on a discount rack. It
looked professionally printed and was perfect bound. Was it an
'official' publication do you think? Or possibly a one off done by a
'consumer'?
I cherish all of my 3.5 books, as I see them as the last edition of D&D.
I made a point of buying a second set of core books on Amazon before
they went away as my existing set is a bit worn and I didn't want to
end up paying top-dollar for a used set should the demand remain high.
The high prices for used books does suggest that there are plenty of
others out there who dislike the 4e system enough to pay for used 3.5e
books so that they can stay with the system. I wonder how well 4e
sales are holding up with the economic troubles that are going on and
the issues that many 3.5e customers (or ex-customers) have with the 4e
design.
