And, why must they be *maximized*?!

Why shouldn't they be? What kind of retard wouldn't?

An altruist.

An altruist who isn't a retard would know that maximizing
profits would give him the greatest resources to apply to his
altruism.

If the company takes in $X net, the man in charge can either
keep more of it for "profit" (leaving it sit around to
accumulate or give more to investors) or he can pay his
workers more.

Which one more directly benefits his workers?

Which one will keep him actually running the company?

This is the area of law where you need changes. As things
sit, it's
very difficult for someone running a company to -- for example
-- say "You know, I think making $100 million a year is plenty,
and I think I'll just keep reinvesting the profits we've made
into this annuity which will keep us at this size, and increase
pay for all workers every year". Unless he's the complete and
sole owner of the company with absolutely no one to answer to,
he's probably got stockholders or investors who invested for
the reason of getting a lot of money back, and any action he
takes which reduces that is likely to stick in more than a few
craws. Craws who have, currently, legal recourse to kick him
out.

Sure it needs to change. But how? Those investors not only
wield power
over the CEO but the politicians that they can bribe with their
profits.

Or they might just expect a profit for their investment. Those evil
conspirators, they are.

Adjust your tin foil hat. The orbital mind control lasers are
leaking through.
