I knew Gygax was weird, but really.

Well, Gygax was a Christian. I understand his first wife was a Jehovah's Witness, but that he was a mainstream Protestant type for most of his life.

I can easily believe that he didn't know they'd knock gamers' donations back. Of course, this is one of the many reasons why I don't support religious charities of any kind.

    ... I knew Gygax was weird, ... C&S was very overtly and deliberately based on European Christian mythology, with large doses of Tolkein mixed in for the fantasy aspects. ... The LOTR aspects were more obvious, certainly, but the subtle things I'm talking about don't get a lot of play, things that we've taken pretty much for granted since they've been in almost every edition; things like the various clerical spells which shadow Biblical miracles, the description of the cleric and paladin classes, the repeated use of 6 as an number symbolic of evil (the 666 layers of the Abyss, Lolth's home on the 66th layer, etc.), and so on. ...
