The main thing I'm curious about is what keeps the crater from flooding. Something must be actively draining it. Perhaps volcanic heat is driving hot springs out under the surrounding ocean, and by some quirk of geology the springs are drawing their water primarily from the crater itself? Still pretty scary, that means they're living in a rather active hot zone. And I wouldn't want to live on the lower levels when a major hurricane's storm surge came through the area.
