Having spent a quiet night in town, the group decided to question some villagers in the market place the next morning about kobolds, death cults, and any other suspicious thing they might have seen.
The halfing rogue sought out what seemed to be the sleaziest, greediest, most corrupt merchant (Streetwise check) and picked his pocket, looking for some sign that he was connected to the death cult. Upon finding a little script written to Avandra, the rogue pretended to pick it up off the ground and asked the merchant if he had accidentally dropped this. The merchant thanked him and gave out a gold piece reward.
The tiefling warlord went to Valthrun's tower and asked to speak to the sage, but the sage's handyman said that Valthrun was busy and could not be disturbed. Questioned about his feelings toward death cults and "if he had to die, what would be his favorite way," the handyman told the warlord he was crazy and shut the door. The warlord felt (Insight check) that the handiman was not part of the cult, but he still suspected Valthrun.
The dragonborn paladin found a girl selling wildflowers and asked for some daisies, because he liked daisies. She told him that she usually got those from up north by the old keep, but she was afraid now due to the goblins that had been spotted lurking around it. The paladin promised to go clean them out for her.
The wizard asked about anything strange going on in the area, and mention was made of a human who'd come through recently looking for some old dragon's tomb. The human had disappeared and no one in town knows whether something bad happened to him or whether he just gave up in disgust and left after not finding it.
The dwarf fighter failed to get any useful information from anyone.
After discussing whether to head out towards the kobold waterfall or tackle the goblins around the old keep, the party voted to try and clear out the kobolds first. On the road they were ambushed by a slightly different set of kobolds. During the fight, the party got their first taste of magic as the wyrmpriest kept lobbing orbs at the wizard, eating up his hit points pretty quickly while the dragonshields tied down the fighters. Fortunately, the tiefling warlord was able to heal the wizard before death and the paladin charged the wyrmpriest, forcing it to deal with him and leave the wizard alone. The skirmisher snuck up on the halfling rogue and scored a crit on him, causing the little fellow to use his second wind.
More action points were spent this time, especially given the warlord's ability to grant +2 to hit & +4 damage when an AP was spent to make an attack. Even one of the wizard's Magic Missile spells benefitted from this, and I think that made them (the players) begin to warm up to 4E a little. About half the daily powers were used in this encounter, which took about 4 rounds and netted them some treasure (including the Orcus medallion).
After a short rest the part approached the waterfall. Some of the members spotted the kobolds through the trees (Perception check), and the group tried to approach quietly but failed (Stealthy check). At that point initiative was rolled and the battle started.
The wizard nailed six minions with his Sleep spell while the halfling rogue got combat advantage over the skirmisher and knocked him down to 1 hit point. The paladin, warlord, and dwarf waded into melee, scotching a couple of minions and damaging the dragonshield in the sacred circle.

Due to time constraints, that is where we stopped for the evening. Between games, one of the players had created his own 4E character *** and transferred his stats to it, so he certainly seems to be even more prone to accepting 4E than the others.
