WTF?
While there are certainly cases in which code is "to fix something", I'd
guess a fairly large chunk of the code I write is new. Even when it is
fixing existing code, it can frequently be a very substantial creative
effort.
My last job, I was a computer tech, and worked with the devs when
a software upgrade was being done. I didn't code, although Ihave
a degree in computer programming. My job was to take phone calls
and note error messages on any new code. But my experiences with
coding in university did help me communicate problems with the
code to the devs.
Useful.
Programmers write code and get paid, the company that sells the
code is who makes money over the lifetime of the software.
This is not the only business model out there; in fact, it's statistically
the minority. The majority of code written is NOT SOLD.
I wrote a web store for someone recently. He is not SELLING that code. He
is using it to obtain a competitive advantage in a tough market.
BTW, I have done substantial professional writing, some professional editing,
and a great deal of professional coding both in terms of debugging and in
terms of new code. Interestingly, the writing I do is largely
paid-for-writing. I write an article for developerWorks, say. They pay me.
I hold copyright, and all they are buying is exclusive license for a month
or so. But since that month can get them coverage on Slashdot, they are
quite willing to pay for it.
You can MAKE writing (or coding) work on a pay-to-work model, or on a
property ownership model. Both have their places.
