Based on H1, grenades go by ammo supply, not power/magic item rules.

That seems too bad. They seem to fit the same model as other daily
powers.

Yeah, I can see that one go either way. On the one hand, it stretches
disbelief that only slingers (e.g., rogues) can use special grenades. On
the other hand, it makes some sense that only they have the proper
training to pull off the exploit, like fighters and tripping. And the
power rules would abstract away ammunition issues, which I try to do as
much as I can anyway. (Now that there are no magic arrows, I told my
archer players to just forget about tracking arrows. I hate tracking it
myself, and I won't make somebody else do it.)

I just use little Ziploc bags of 20 colored toothpicks and have a
dragon shaped 'thing' in the middle of my screen with an open mouth to
toss the expended 'arrows' in. Keep the tracking issues simple and
tactile.

So I could go either way on that. I think grenades-as-powers would break
some people's brains, but in some ways it's really tempting. Maybe for a
splatbook. :D

The abstractions in 4e have already broken my suspension of disbelief.
I am finding that if I look at it as a wargame where the objective is
heavily focused on game balance and rules structure without much
interest in world-consistency I do better. The above suggestion (and
making ranged weapons use an 'at-will' power with no ammo) makes sense
in this context. Since I'm going to stick to 3.5e for RPG play,
looking at cleaning up 4e as a skirmish game that is similar to D&D
makes sense for my purposes.
