I do. Drug prohibition is largely supported by religious moralists.
And even more largely supported by drug dealers
Prohibition is what *creates* black market drug dealers.
Yes.
So any discussion of legalizing, say, marijuana, runs into the problem
that there are some EXTREMELY rich people who are getting richer at a very
impressive rate ONLY BECAUSE IT IS ILLEGAL.
With marijuana, I doubt it is that simple. There is a control issue there,
since fairly high quality marijuana is quite easy to grow, and *very* high
quality stuff can be easily grown in substantial quantities in one's garage
with a little education and decent clones.
I believe that the organized effort to keep drugs criminalized is probably
driven a lot more by drug lords than by moralists. The moralists may be
greater in sheer numbers, but not necessarily in organization, focus, or
funding.
I disagree, slightly. First of all, there is evidence that a lot of high
end drug profits end up in the hands of governmental organizations such as
the CIA, so let's call a spade a spade. The prison industrial complex is
busy making buckets upon buckets of money from imprisoning nonviolent drug
offenders. Furthermore, the "moralists" *are* incredibly well-organized,
focused, and funded. Did you not notice their near-takeover of one of the
major political parties in the United States?
It's a political and economic question, into which some gullible
religious
people have been coopted.
That sounds about right. Then again, lots of political and economic
agendas
are moved forward by gullible religious people.
Oh, quite often. However, I don't think that makes those agendas
religious;
I think it mostly makes the gullible religious people dupes.
Gullible religious people (and many are, even if they are not nearly as
gullible in other areas of their lives) *are* frequently dupes. They have
been since religion began.
I also don't think their religion has any impact on the agenda, or their
effect on it.
Nonsense. You need to study the origin of the prohibition movement,
particularly in the United States. It was heavily pushed primarily by
well-organized Protestant organizations.
These people would be just as gullible if they believed something else,
and
just as easy to manipulate into supporting other peoples' quests for power
and wealth.
I disagree. The insidious nature of the way religion is spread,
particularly the brainwashing of children when they are too young to make
their own critical judgments, gives it a unique quality when it comes to
exploiting people.
