We just had a dragon - young adult blue (CR11) vs 5 11th level
characters. The party did have a hard time. Half the wizard's spells
were stopped by SR. One third of the ranger's weapon to-hits were
stopped by AC, despite the bard's inspire courage and inspire
greatness, the cleric's prayer, and the wizard's haste all still
ongoing. The halfling rogue was out of range, having spent too much
time on outlying baddies, sneak attacking them under a greater
invisibility spell, and couldn't get back to attempt any sneak attacks
on the dragon. The cleric's spells were more effective than the
wizard's, but that was just good die rolling.
They used up probably more than 50% of their resources on the fight
(hit points and available spells, but not wands or arrows - the ranger
and cleric were both around 30% of their hp remaining, and that's with
the ranger using an entire amulet of tears as well as the temporary
hit dice from the bard's inspire greatness). They all had problems,
but they all focused on what they were already good at. For example,
the wizard did not try to smack the dragon. The ranger did not cast
spells on the dragon.
A couple of points:
1. dragons are (or were in 3.0 at least, I haven't done a comparative
analysis to 3.5) under-CRed. That is, they're tough for their CR,
often by at least a point or two.
2. you mention 'outlying baddies'. Unless they were part of the
dragon's built-in power (such as a wizard's familiar or a paladin's
mount), they should increase the CR as well.
Without more detailed information, I'd expect this fight to be a tough
