How can they tell the difference between a blow which failed to

"hit" but failed to bypass the DR granted by Armour Specialization?

By telling the players what the AC is after they attack, and what
the DR is after they hit. AC is stuff that can be bypassed with skill
aswell as strength, it has little gaps and weak points, where DR is
like cutting down a tree.

Argh! This is a horrible idea.

It's really not. It's a basic limitation of RPGs that the DM can
never convey enough information about the scene to ensure everyone's
seeing it the same way, let alone seeing it as their characters would.

This helps to convey information when it's appropriate to do so, far
more quickly and cleanly than the code words I used in my younger days.

We gave up on original DnD way back when when after a while monsters
and things became mere blocks of numbers. Stuff like this just
encourages that.

Not IME. Have you used the technique? It allows players to know more
about what their characters are experiencing, leaving them to play with
some confidence in whatever style they find most fun.

The classic was the time they ran into some ogres and one player piped
up "AC 5, 3 HD, THAC0 18, d10 damage or by weapon" (something like
that) at which point I realized that they were no longer playing a role
playing game but some sort of mathematics game.

That was not a logical conclusion to make at all. Had he said "Iron
hide and tough as horses, pretty good fighters, and hit like the
strongest man you ever saw" like his character did, he'd be conveying
exactly the same information.

In game, he's like, you know, a guy who looks at a car and rattles
off it's engine size and approximate power, electronic driving aids, and
recent safety features. Like all the local kids did when we were ten
years old.
