Devil does sound more accurate for Succubus, yes. Erinyes weren't
fiends, they were, as you say, the divine incarnation of vengeance
and
punishment. When they were added to the game, though, 'LE' was
where
they fell (reasonably so), which meant 'devil' (not so reasonable).

Of course, merging them and making them the same thing because
they're
about the same CR and both have tits is *dumb*. They have entirely
different roles in the game.

What was the role of the erinyes, truly?

They were female personifications of vengeance in
greek mythology.
They punished oathbreakers in general and those who broke
natural laws, for example those who broke ties of kinship
through murdering family members got special attention from
the Erinyes. They usually drove their targets mad.

So, how does that make them likely suspects to be devils?

They're "enforcing" Law with Evil means exclusively.

Erinyes are "an embodiment of the act of self-cursing contained in a broken
oath." In other words, they give out punishments that the person being
punished knows they deserve. They exact retribution that man may not have
the right to properly punish. They sound more like Inevitables than Devils,
which has already been suggested.

They *like* tormenting, torturing and killing law- and oathbreakers
without showing any Good (or Chaotic of course) traits.

They punish evildoers. They are supposed to be a personification of
judgement. There is no "like" or "dislike" involved.

That's "devilish" enough for me...

Not really. Nothing about their original role suggests fiendishness to

Well, Evil for one thing.

They're of course different from Mephisto in Goethe's Faust. :-)

Dropping the current version is okay, but there should be
Erinyes/Furies as part of any greek/roman-style campaign at least.
A type of devil who hunts down oathbreakers, especially those
who break an oath with Good cause, is nice to have for standard
games too.

So, are they going to hunt down people who kill their own family members
for
a Good cause as well?

Shouldn't they? :)

I suppose, if that unlikely scenario comes up. My point is that they hunt
down oathbreakers. That seems more Lawful than anything, with no real
attention paid to issues of Good and Evil.

Making them into a non-devil is probably the best place to start, because
they just don't fit the mold.

So you would prefer them in the (next) Deities and Demigods as
part of the greek (or roman) pantheon?

That seems reasonable.
