Re: Adventure Intro - Meditiation

The other night I started the game with a 'close your eyes, visualise,

Worked really really well... so I thought I'd share the little bit of
text I wrote for it...

Not a bad boxed text sample. As long as they describe a moment and
not a prolonged scene it's all good.

Customising for the characters at hand is certainly something I try
to do, but not in the same way. I'd never tell a player how their
character was feeling, if they want to be immersive that's up to them. I
tend to expound based on their characters skills and abilties, the Ranger
notices a track leading away, the Rogue sees a good hiding spot, the
Wizard sees some strange runes on a parchment, the Cleric sees part of an
Evil holy symbol scratched on the floor.
It's just a matter of having things in the scene for them to see,
regardless of their importance. Have most people carry some token of
their faith on them and you can even start telling little sub-plots with
it to the Cleric, ditto with Druids and wildlife, or even Fighters and
the manufacture of their opponent's weapons if you like.

Does anyone else do this sort of thing when you game? What else do you
do to help focus people and build for mood for a good beginning?

My beginnings are ususally pretty slow bookkeeping stuff, often going
quickly over extensive in-game downtime. Smells, sounds, the weather,
ambient life, and the curses of your enemies as they assault you are
something I do throughout the game, if I remember to, when I'm not
overwhelmed with mechanical matters.

It's easy to get into doing. When you walk out of the house, think
how you'd describe the day and the people around you. If you're ever out
in the bush or in a dungeon-like environment, think about describing it
as you go.
