So I have decided to take the plunge and (attempt to) create my own world.
I figured that I would start by making the world first, then go down to
continents, countries, etc.
Is this a good/bad/ridiculous way to do this??

I started the opposite way. Not suggesting it, but this is what I did.
I started with a country. A small city or a few cities, a couple
of sites to investigate. These small cities become a developed
area for the players to begin with.
As time went on I could expand the world as the players needed it.
Of course, I expanded faster because the idea was hot in my
mind.
Be sure to include a pantheon, currency standards (if different than PHB),
and any changes to races/classes in the small area.
Having some idea where you can begin with helps shape the entire world
and IMHO makes your job easier.
