{kjd-exp} /raise dead/ on a mutilated corpse?

Hi All,

my recent (just posted) article on called shots brought something to
mind.

/raise dead/ is described as requiring a fairly intact body and not
providing missing parts. Does 'missing' in this case mean 'not present'
or 'not attached'?

That is, I realize that if someone has lost a hand (it got cut off and
left behind) /raise dead/ will provide a nice healthy stump on that arm.
Fair enough. If you have a decapitated body and the head got left
behind, /raise dead/ might make it a body with a... nice healthy stump
of a neck (IOW, still a corpse). Again, fair enough.

Now, if you have a decapitated corpse *and* the head, and put them
together before casting /raise dead/, does this bring the person back to
life, head attached and functional? If so, this is a precedent for
allowing other body parts to be reattached this way.

Reattaching body parts usually requires regeneration in some form or
another (either natural or the /regenerate/ spell. The spell is seventh
level and 'only' restores body parts, it doesn't bring someone back from
the dead. /Raise dead/ is a fifth level spell with big casting cost
and nasty side effects, should it actually be able to bring someone back
from the dead *and* reattach parts?

/Resurrection/ is also seventh level, has bigger casting cost and
(almost) the same side effects as /raise dead/, but can work with just a
small part of the remains -- it can recreate the body given just a
finger or something. This is clearly more than either of the other
spells, but it costs more to cast and is higher level than /raise dead/.

I'm curious about how people interpret this aspect of the spell. I've
got an idea how I plan to use it IMC, but I'd like to see what others
think.
