Actually since four level three characters is EL 7 and the frogs are
only EL 4 the party should still win fairly easily, but with massive
luck or a depleted party the monsters MIGHT just pull out a win.
Parties do *NOT* have EL. Encounters have EL.
If the "party" in question is NPCs they sure as heck do. And since the
GM in this case is running both sides as a test they are by definition
NPCs.
Remember "even" challenges are supposed to be fairly reliable
walkovers for a fresh party.
Yep. And this encounter was anything BUT even.
"Even" would have been FOUR characters - you know, a bruiser, a spell
slinger, a healer and a jack-of-all-trades? The classic configuration.
ALL of them of level 3. Pit that whole party of four against one CR 3
critter, or 2 CR 1 critters; both encounters have EL 3. That's be a
walkover unless the dice really hate you.
Now, the druid is all alone - which reduces him to 1/4 'challenge'.
Besides the fact that parties do not have EL, his "EL" would not be 3,
it'd be 1.5, at most.
He is a single NPC of level 3 in a PC class. He is thus CR 3. That
makes him a EL 3 encounter meeting an EL 4 encounter.
He doesn't magically get weaker being alone. ESPECIALLY since as a
druid he shouldn't be alone, that wolf counts too.
Eh? It's only EL 4 vs. EL 3, the odds are against the EL 3 but it
should only take some luck, not exceeding amounts for the EL 3 to win.
Again, parties don't have EL, and a lone lvl. 3 druid has no friggin'
chance whatsoever against 2 CR 2 critters. Again, barring
extraordinary luck, he's toast. And guess what, he was.
Again. Parties are made of characters with CR. The EL system tells us
roughly how much they are strengthened in combination. And since in
THIS case we are actually looking at NPCs they most certainly DO have
an EL.
