Re: How much would this cost?

Hi,

looking for some non-standard items to introduce into my campaign. At
how much would you price these effects, and why?

- An "elf sight" item: +2 racial (yes, racial, not competence - real
Elves do not benefit) bonus to Spot and / or Search. My guess, it's
really not much better than competence, so bonus squared * 100 gp = 400
gp, 150% = 600 gp if Search is added, 1,000 gp for +2 Listen / Search.
Too little?

Unusual bonus type is at least x2 cost from existing examples.

Thus +2 racial to spot is at least 200 GP *4=> 800 GP. 1,600 for
slotless. No reason two slotless shouldn't just add prices, so 3,200 GP
for this.

Alternately an Ioun Stone that grants Alertness gives a stacking +2
slotless to two skills and costs 10,000 GP! This is an almost identical
item in effect (even one of the same skills) and thus by the rule to
always compare to existing items takes precedence over the above.

10,000 GP, minimum, more people who care about spot have the alertness
feat than have Elves as characters IMAO so your choice of bonus type
makes the item MORE useful than the Ioun stone!

- What if low-light vision is added? Darkvision kosts 8,000 gp, is
low-light vision worth more or less? I think there is an "Elf Sight"
spell in one of the Complete books, I think it's Rgr 1, Sor/Wiz 1 -
that as an "always on" ability would indicate 2,000 gp. Too little?

What's the duration on the "Elf Sight" spell? From the SRD:
If a continuous item has an effect based on a spell with a duration
measured in rounds, multiply the cost by 4. If the duration of the
spell is 1 minute/level, multiply the cost by 2, and if the duration is
10 minutes/level, multiply the cost by 1.5. If the spell has a 24-hour
duration or greater, divide the cost in half.

If it is not hour/level you need to adjust the cost. And I always worry
about ballance on splat book spells anyway, so I'd feel free to up the
cost if it strikes me as too low (and 2,000 GP does sound low to me,
but not obviously broken).

- What if the "auto search within 5' of hidden door" is added? It does
not come up often, but it is a plus, of course.

I wouldn't object to that as a feat, so I'd say about 5000GP, probably
less in reality, I can't see anyone actually taking such a feat, but
better too high than too low and most of the feats granted by items are
crap anyway.

- I'm thinking about adding this to a bow (so probably charge more for
unslotted). What if it only functions for someone who speaks Elven
(Elves do not benefit since they get abilities they already have;
Half-Elves get a net +1 Listen / Search; only non-Elves who took Elven
as a bonus language really benefit). 10% discount, more, less? What if
it only functions as 'spell-trigger' (i.e., only Rgr or Sor/Wiz)?

On a bow and not counting as a weapon bonus pricing as unslotted works
for me. So 10,000 for the skills, maybe 6,000 for lowlight (assuming
your spell is 10min/level and doubling for slotless), 5,000 for the
hidden doors thing. The language thing is IMAO a significant and
relevant restriction, I'd go with 30% off.

Thus total cost so far: 14,700 GP which I then drop to an even 14,000
because I am probably way to high on the hidden door's thing.

Spell Trigger but unlimited charges isn't in core. I wouldn't allow it.
If I did I'd guess 15% off.

- Casting Arrow Mind (Complete Adventurer) is an immediate action. But
as a spell-trigger item, it's a standard action. How much would you
charge for a '+1 Longbow of Arrowmind' - only usuable for someone who
can trigger that spell, but 'always on'. Back in the 3.0 days, there
was a Bow of True Strike - calculating what the 'True Strike' part
would cost, it was 2,000 gp, but back then adding additional abilities
was 200%, not 150%. In 3.5 this would be 1,500 gp, then. But would
leaving it at +2,000 gp be OK? (Much) more or less?

I note that the Ring of Featherfall costs 2200 for a slotted item that
casts a level 1 swift action spell. This implies that your price is
somehow way too low, OTOH I can't imagine WHY the ring of feather
falling is so expensive so I'd probably go with your price...
